| Apprentice Jockeys
An applicant for an apprentice jockey licence must:

have successfully completed the Malayan Racing Association’s approved apprentice jockey training scheme approved by the Association or an associated Club’s apprentice jockey training programme with a training school approved by the Association. or
-
have successfully completed an apprentice jockey training programme with a training school approved by the Association and has a proven performance record.

pass a riding competency test conducted by the Stipendiary Stewards.

pass a test on the MRA Rules of Racing.

be able to claim an allowance and his riding weight must not exceed fifty (50) kilogrammes.

pass a medical examination.

be between sixteen (16) years and before attaining the age of twenty-six (26) years when he or she commences apprentice jockey training. and
-
be recommended by the Stipendiary Stewards.
An applicant must not have record of any criminal or bookmaking offences.
Apprentice Grades:

An 'A' Grade Apprentice Jockey is one who is permitted to ride in open races. He is not entitled to any claim under Rule 51.

A 'B' Grade Apprentice Jockey is one who is permitted to ride in open races and is entitled to a claim under Rule 51.

A 'C' Grade Apprentice Jockey is one who is permitted to ride in trackwork, trials, tests and Official Race Trials but not in races. (Amended 1/10/2007)
An Apprentice Jockey must be indentured to a registered Trainer who shall act as his master.
An Indenture Agreement must be signed between the Apprentice Jockey or his guardian and the registered Trainer.
The Indenture Agreement must provide that the Apprentice's earnings from races shall be divided in the following proportions;
two-thirds to the Apprentice Jockey and one- third to the Trainer.
The Association shall have the right to withhold the Apprentice Jockey's earnings until the completion of his career as an Apprentice Jockey.

An Apprentice Jockey shall be required to maintain a minimum sum of S$40,000/RM80,000.

Any balance in excess of the minimum sum can be withdrawn by the Apprentice Jockey provided he is above twenty one (21) years of age.

Withdrawals under Regulation 25.5.2 can only be withdrawn in June and December of each year.
An Apprentice Jockey taking a mount outside his master’s stable must obtain the prior permission of his master and approval of the Stipendiary Steward.
All new Apprentices shall be required to ride at such lengths as to be able to kick a horse out, ie. to ride 'hands and heels'.
Permission to use a whip in a race will only be considered after an Apprentice has ridden at least twelve (12) races.
- An Apprentice Jockey shall be given at least fifteen (15) rides during the first year, twenty five (25) rides during the second year and forty (40) rides from the third year onwards by his trainer/master. Failure to comply with this requirement by the Trainer may attract a fine of up to $5,000 for the first violation and a fine of up to $10,000 for subsequent violations to be decided by the Stipendiary Stewards.
Apprentice Jockey Training Scheme
The Malayan Racing Association’s approved Apprentice Jockey Training Scheme is briefly outlined below:
Aspiring apprentices will join the industry as track riders with MRA licensed trainers for a minimum period of six months.

Selection of track riders suitable for advancement as apprentices will be done in July each year.
A maximum of 8 track riders will be selected. |

The selected 8 will be granted “C” Grade Apprentice Jockey licences and will be indentured to MRA trainers where they will serve as apprentices (Grade “C”) for six months.

Upon satisfactory performance, they then go for overseas training for one year.

On successful completion of the one year training programme, they return and are granted “B” Grade Apprentice Jockey licences. |

Applicants, male or female, aspiring to be apprentice jockeys must satisfy the following conditions:-
- be Singapore or Malaysian citizens.
- be between the age of sixteen (16) years and twenty six (26) years.
- be physically and mentally fit, with 6/6 vision and must pass a medical examination by a doctor approved by the Association.
- riding weight must not exceed 50 kilogrammes at the time of the application for the licence.
- have completed at least primary education at PSLE or SRP level.
- have passed a riding competency test conducted by the Stipendiary Stewards.
- have passed a test on the MRA Rules of Racing.
- have served at least six months as a track rider.
- have parents' or guardians' consent if below the age of twenty one (21) years.
- not have record of any criminal or bookmaking offences.
In July each year, the Panel of Stipendiary Stewards will interview all the applicants and select a maximum of eight track riders for the MRA Apprentice Training Scheme.
The selected candidates will be granted 'C' Grade Apprentice Jockey licences and be indentured to MRA licensed Trainers for a minimum period of five (5) years. During the indentureship, the apprentice will undergo local training for the first six (6) months before they are sent for their overseas attachment for a period of one (1) year.
The Association will arrange for their attendance at the overseas training institutes for the apprentices and will provide them with economy return air passage and out-of-pocket allowance of S$500 per month. Upon successful completion of the course, the apprentices will return to their trainers.
The apprentices' trainers/masters (local) will be responsible for their apprentices' board and lodging and are expected to continue paying the apprentices their usual salaries. Their local trainers will also take up an insurance policy for their apprentices while they are undergoing training overseas.
